The Flicker Residences feature six group homes surrounding a garden courtyard and connected by an inside walkway. Each home offers private bedrooms and bathrooms for every person served and many design features for increased safety and accessibility. The facility also includes a therapeutic pool and an adult day program that provides a rich variety of both site- and community-based activities. Nurse case managers provide close oversight of medications and medical treatments and remain in close contact with physicians.

The program allows those served to have most of their needs met at home as they age. The homes are beautiful and very nicely furnished. Having so many supports available at the residence provides greater flexibility in responding to each person's needs. The nurses are very involved, keeping in touch with the families of residents and remaining accessible to them as well as their loved ones.

Outcomes
The aging population, particularly those with certain types of developmental disabilities, has increased health needs that often lead to lengthy hospitalizations and nursing home placement. On-site supports at the Flicker Residences allow many of these needs to be met within the person's home there. Hospital and nursing home stays are reduced, and coordination of the follow-up treatments after an illness or injury can be closely monitored. Short-term skilled nursing needs can be met on-site only when the individual qualifies for private-duty home health aides or nurses. However, there are many health needs that can be met by the well-trained direct care staff under the guidance of the nurse case managers at Flicker. There is a strong emphasis on healthy eating and daily exercise to improve overall well being and to minimize vulnerability to illness and injury.
