With the recent retraction of Dr. Wakefield’s paper on the link between autism and the MMR vaccine in The Lancet medical journal, Bancroft is hopeful that the issue of vaccine safety will put to rest the debate regarding whether or not to vaccinate children. Dr. Wakefield’s study has caused harm by allowing unvaccinated children to be vulnerable to many serious diseases. At Bancroft, we understand that autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects communication and social abilities and we hope that research attention can now be refocused on identifying the legitimate reasons for autism that have been unnecessarily diverted due to Dr. Wakefield’s false claims. While this is an extremely unfortunate illustration of poor science, Bancroft is confident that good science will continue to uncover more about autism that will benefit future generations.
