Delaware athletes going to National
Games!
Bancroft's own Andrea Sheridan
and Theresa Ventura have been selected to compete
in the sport of bocce representing Special
Olympics Delaware at the 2010 USA National Games.
Their experience, commitment and achievements in
bocce have made them eligible to compete in this
prestigious event, to be held next in July, 2010
in Lincoln, Nebraska. Andrea
and Theresa were in the top division of the 2009
Summer Games and won all of their competitions,
earning themselves a gold medal. Now, the pair
will again train for months before competing
against some of the finest athletes from around
the country. More than 3,000 people will take
part in the National Games. Bocce
competitions will be held at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln's Cook Pavilion - home of the
Husker's football team. Throughout the games,
athletes will enjoy the opportunity of a lifetime
- experiencing the sport, spirit and splendor of a
national athletic event. With this endeavor
will come everlasting memories of not just the
events, but of friendships made, unparalleled
experiences during the trip and the excitement of
being part of the USA National Games.
Congratulations and good luck,
Andrea and
Theresa! |
Bancroft self-advocates speak
at conference
Seven self-advocates from Bancroft led
discussions at last month's Self-Advocacy
Conference, hosted by the New Jersey Self-Advocacy
Project of the Arc of New Jersey. Pictured above
from left to right are self-advocates Nikos
Pappas, Vicki Brown, Frank Kennedy, Bonnie Davis,
Paul Duckworth, Lisa Fay and Todd Emmons, with
Michael Rogers, Community Services for Adults
Program Director (standing), who supports the
group. The group presented two workshops on
Getting Along with Staff, which included
discussions related to communication, respect and
things to do to build positive
relationships.

H1N1 vaccination: our view
by Caroline
Eggerding, M.D. Vice
President Clinical Services, Chief Medical
Officer
The vaccination against the
H1N1 flu shots will be available to Bancroft
shortly although we are still working out
details. The vaccination is strongly
recommended although we have heard reports that
some family physicians are hesitant.
The reluctance of some community
physicians to immunize against the H1N1 flu
(a.k.a. swine flu) is somewhat
surprising. Perhaps they remember the last
attempt to immunize a large population against the
pandemic flu in the 1970s when there was an
increased incidence of
Guillain-Barresyndrome. We've
learned a lot since then and everything we are
reading suggests that there is no difference in
the manufacture of this vaccine compared to the
seasonal flu vaccine. It is always hard to
predict the course of a flu pandemic, so we can't
be completely certain what to expect this
season. However, younger individuals are at
greatest risk for illness, and places like
Bancroft are at high risk because of all the
shared living space. College campuses are
already experiencing some difficulties.
There are no absolutes in life but,
personally, I plan to get the vaccine as soon as
it is available for me. You may wish to consult
with your family physician, but be sure he/she is
aware of your family member's living
situation. A separate, seasonal flu shot is
recommended as well. For more

New Jersey has issued recommendations this week to
organizations serving people with developmental
disabilities; see the item below. If
you have questions or concerns, please contact the
program's nursing staff. I am also available
to answer questions at (856) 429-5637, ext. 354,

Person-Centered Planning: Lessons from the
front lines A Clarence York
Lecture Our second Clarence York
lecture this fall will focus on person-centered
planning. Dr. Angela Novak Amado of the University
of Minnesota will discuss lessons learned by
agencies that have successfully implemented
person-centered planning. The lecture will be held
on Wednesday October 21 at Tavistock Country Club,
just outside of Haddonfield. Registration
will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the lecture
beginning at 10 a.m. Currently a researcher and
administrator at the University of Minnesota, Dr.
Amado has more than 30 years of experience in
supporting people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. She offers the
following background to her
presentation:
While "person-centered
planning" has become a banner phrase in services
for people with disabilities, the realization of
the principles underlying such planning remains
elusive. People who require support may have
good plans without having good lives. The
quality of supports provided in the name of
being "person-centered" often remain
"system-centered" or
"agency-centered."
Agencies with a sincere
commitment to the implementation of these
principles have learned a great deal about the
hard work and challenges required. This
presentation will present some of the lessons
learned over time by staff and organizations
[that] made a multi-year, authentic commitment
to becoming "person-centered" support
agencies.
To sign up for this lecture,
please contact Sue Crouse at Bancroft at
(856) 429-5637, ext. 279, or by e-mail at
scrouse@bnh.org.
There is a $25 charge; however, there is no fee
for staff and adults served by
Bancroft. |
Inclusive ministry intern to support
spiritual needs
We
are very pleased to welcome Victoria McGrath from
the Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities,
who will be our clinical pastoral education (CPE)
student this year. She will be available to help
support the spiritual life of those we serve
residentially. Working on a part-time basis,
McGrath's role will include fostering faith
relationships and helping those interested to
access religious services. We
are also pleased to welcome Bancroft music
therapist Kathleen Nicosia to the Inclusive
Ministry Committee. To learn more
about McGrath's plans or to join our Inclusive
Ministry Committee, contact Sister Krista Mote at
kmote@bnh.org or (856) 429-5637,

Have concerns? Report them asap! If you have a concern about
something related to one of our programs, please
make a point of reporting it to the responsible
person or his/her supervisor as soon as you can so
it can be addressed. We sometimes receive delayed
complaints about program issues that would have
been better and more quickly resolved had they
been raised right away. Withholding concerns
makes it harder to determine what happened and,
more important, makes it more difficult for
Bancroft to take corrective action If
you are concerned about a potentially unethical
act or unsafe practice, you may also report
concerns anonymously via our Compliance Line.
Available at all times - 24 hours a day, seven
days a week - this toll-free hotline number is
(800) 385-4652. Compliance Line
callers can also call again later to check on the
status of their concern. Please note that the
Compliance Line should not replace our standard
communication or routine reporting processes
(through program staff and up through the chain of
command), but is available to families who are
otherwise reluctant to voice
concerns. |
DDD changes billing system
We've just received word from New
Jersey's Division of Developmental Disabilities
(DDD) that the agency is moving from a payment
coupon booklet to a monthly billing statement for
individuals living in residential settings.
Effective immediately, please pay the amount shown
on the billing statement and stop using the coupon
booklet. Please also make sure to include the stub
at the bottom of the statement with your
payment. If you have a
question about your outstanding balance or other
adjustments/credits, DDD asks that you wait until
your next statement arrives, since the agency is
still refining this process. If your recent
payments are still outstanding or if you have
other questions, please call MAXIMUS at (800)
599-2373. |
