Come see our new brand on
Bancroft Day!
Why should you entrust your family member to
Bancroft? Why should someone donate money to
us? Why do we come to work every day? There
are many answers, but underlying them all is a
common truth about who we are.
So who are we? If we asked you today to
define what the Bancroft "brand" is, could you?
Bancroft is unique and we want our brand to
celebrate that uniqueness and showcase our common
vision.
Please mark your calendar and
plan to attend our annual Bancroft Day event,
which is planned for Saturday, October 17
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on our Haddonfield Campus
(rain date: October 18). This special
event brings together people from across the
organization for a wonderful day of activities,
entertainment, food and just spending time with
old and new friends. And, this year we have
an extra special reason for you to come to
Bancroft Day - the announcement of our new
brand.
As we've been reporting, our strategic
planning process brought to light a series of
steps that need to be taken to better position
ourselves for the future. Join us on Bancroft
Day to learn more about how we can all convey what
it means to be a part of the Bancroft
family.
The unveiling of our new brand and
logo will occur at 11:30 a.m. This is an
exciting time and we can't wait for everyone to
join in celebrating who we are and what we stand
for!

Watch for your invitation to the Butterfly
Ball!
Plans are under way
to make this year's Butterfly Ball the best
ever! The event will be chaired by
Philadelphia Phillies player Greg Dobbs. And
it will honor several local leaders:
Stewart Business Systems and its president, Joe
O'Malley, will receive the Community Leadership
Award for the company's extensive support of
Bancroft; and Barbara and Jack Tarditi will
receive the Margaret Bancroft Award for their deep
and longstanding commitment to improving the lives
of persons served by Bancroft.
The event will be held on
Saturday, November 21, at the Westin Mount
Laurel in Mount Laurel, N.J.
The ball's goal this
year is to raise $325,000 to support Bancroft
programs. Please consider how you can support
the event - either through attendance,
sponsorship, or even just placing an ad or a
tribute in the program journal, which the guests
will receive that evening. We will also
conduct a raffle before and during the event. The
prize: a Phillies VIP package at a home game
during the 2010 season. Watch for more
information on this additional opportunity to
support the event.
If you are interested in
sponsorship, program journal opportunities, or
need more information, please call Kimberly
Caputo at (856) 348-1145 or e-mail kcaputo@bnh.org. |

State issues quarterly report on community
providers
The New Jersey Department of
Human Services produces a quarterly risk
management report, which is used to monitor the
health, safety and well-being of those served by
community providers; provider qualifications;
fiscal integrity; and overall system performance.
Bancroft is one of 160 organizations that
participate in this process, conducted by the
department's Office of Program Integrity and
Accountability (OPIA).
The findings of this OPIA report
reinforce Bancroft's mission to ensure every
person served is given opportunities for lifelong
learning and fulfillment. We always strive not
only to meet but also to exceed the quality
indicators of the report and many others, and
welcome the positive results highlighted in the
findings.
This information is now available on the
Department of Human Services website:

Children's programs plan
annual Halloween house-decorating contest
Donations needed
asap!
Bancroft's Pediatric and Adolescent
Campus and Community Residential Programs will
compete in the annual Halloween House Decorating
Contest, thanks to the efforts of family members
Mindy Maranon and Karen
D'Ambrosio. The competition is an
eagerly awaited Halloween treat for the kids and
their staff, enabling them to take part in a fun
and creative group activity.
Thirteen homes in community programs
and eight on the Haddonfield Campus are competing
for prizes. (Every participating home receives
prizes.) Organizers request
donations of prizes and decorating supplies no
later than Saturday, October 17. Prize
suggestions include movie tickets, gift
certificates for bowling, or other items that
encourage group activities. Donations can also be
made at the Welcome Table on Bancroft Day.
Please remember to ask family and
friends to contribute to the Halloween
festivities. Those small donations of a few
dollars here and there really add up and enable us
to do some nice things for the children.
Judging will take place between
October 25 and 30. Families are encouraged
to come and view their child's decorations during
the judging period. For more
information, contact Jamie McAllister at Bancroft
at (856) 429-5637, ext. 288, Karen D'Ambrosio at
(908) 722-7356, or Mindy Maranon at (732)
915-8403. |

H1N1 Swine Flu
Update
We are taking the H1N1 flu very
seriously and want to make you aware of the things
we are doing to prevent its spread in Bancroft
programs. Over the last
several months, we have been:
-
monitoring the CDC and other
websites on a daily basis;
-
conducting regular meetings to
review current information and plan our
response;
-
contacting the New Jersey
Department of Health officials to secure H1N1
vaccine when it's available;
-
monitoring staff call-outs due
to illness through the managers;
-
monitoring persons served
illness through the nursing staff;
-
making available personal
protective equipment for staff who are working
with individuals who are ill;
-
sharing information on our
intranet for staff on handwashing (including
videos) and other helpful tips to reduce the
spread of infection; and
-
meeting with staff to discuss
more frequent cleaning for illness prevention
(handwashing, wiping down surfaces, social
distance, etc.). We are:
- offering the regular flu vaccine
to staff beginning in October;
- encouraging persons served to
receive the flu vaccine (or through their
guardian);
- making plans in the event we must continue
to operate with reduced staffing (due to their
own or family member illness); and
- considering daily "health checks" upon
arrival to school if the flu becomes problematic
in the area.
Please also consider
what you are doing at home to prevent the spread
of flu. Following is a link to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention website, which
includes guidance on taking care of a sick person
in your home. http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=xzzns4cab.0.0.7n9pimcab.0&ts=S0413&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fh1n1flu%2Fguidance_homecare.htm&id=preview |

A
Tie-dye day in Delaware
The men and women who live in the
homes on Bancroft Parkway in Wilmington held a
Tie-Dye Barbecue recently. They fired up the
grill, cranked up their favorite tunes, and
enjoyed a delicious spread of classic cook-out
cuisine. In addition, each individual, as well as
his or her invited family and other guests,
created tie-dyed shirt masterpieces.
The activity was such a success,
that individuals from both houses requested that
tie-dying shirts become a regularly scheduled
monthly activity.
If you'd like to try tie-dying on
your own, you can purchase a starter kit from any
major craft store. This is a great outdoor,
warm-weather activity that is also a low-budget
and creative way to give old T-shirts a colorful
makeover!

Teleconference on healthy
relationships
A group of self-advocates is
sponsoring a series of teleconferences on intimate
relationships and sexuality. The National
Conversation on Healthy Relationships will take
place on Oct. 5 and Nov. 2, both at 3 pm. (The
first session was held Sept. 1.) The 90-minute
teleconferences are open to individuals with
disabilities, their family members and service
providers -- anyone interested in learning how
self-advocates can have safe, intimate
relationships.
The sessions will be
facilitated by self-advocate Julie Petty, and will
include guest
speakers:
- Terri Couwenhoven,
sexuality educator with TC Services in
Wisconsin
- Katherine McLaughlin of
Planned Parenthood in New Hampshire
- Christina Bailey of Planned
Parenthood in Indiana
- Heather Kamper of SafePlace
in Texas
Speakers will talk with one another,
and then take questions from listeners across the
nation.
Topics for the Oct. 5 teleconference
will include:
- What
are the dynamics of a healthy,
intimate relationship?
- How can self-advocates learn about and act
on their sexuality?
- What you need to know about safe sex,
including birth control and preventing sexually
transmitted diseases.
- What is consent?
The Nov. 2 teleconference will focus on
advice from peers. For instance, self-advocates
will answer such questions as:
- If you find someone you like, how do you let
them know?
- How do you ask someone out on a date?
- Have you been in a relationship and how did
it work out?
- How intimate have you been in your
relationships?
Cost is $25 per teleconference. Participants
can listen on their own, or gather together around
a speakerphone. Registration deadlines are Oct. 1
and Oct. 29, respectively.
