Q: Why are we told to run a structured daily schedule with some of the adults we serve? Shouldn't they be allowed the freedom to choose their own activities, especially with their free time in the residence?

A: Of course all people should have the freedom to choose their own leisure activities, but for some individuals, particularly those with severe disabilities, more guidance may be necessary to ensure that the chosen activities are safe and appropriate. Furthermore, not all individuals with disabilities are able to select and initiate appropriate activities independently. A structured schedule does not mean that we always choose the activity for the individual, but it may mean that we are responsible for ensuring that appropriate activities (and materials) are available and that the individual is prompted to them. When someone is appropriately engaged, he/she is less likely to seek out alternatives that may not be as appropriate. Furthermore, when someone has a schedule to follow, periods of demands and free time become more predictable and we usually see an improvement in compliance.
