When Adam and Eric first met more than 35 years ago, they were just two young students beginning their journeys at The Bancroft School, Welsh Campus. No one could have predicted that these two boys would grow up to share laughs, memories, and milestones for decades to come.
After graduating from the Bancroft School, Adam and Eric both transitioned into Bancroft’s adult programs, continuing their paths toward independence through our residential and vocational programs.
When the two young men moved into the same Bancroft group home, they quickly became great friends. Soon after, a new program manager named Jeff joined their home. What began as a professional role soon turned into a relationship that felt more like family.
“It’s so important to have purpose in my career,” Jeff says. “I can’t even begin to express how fulfilling it’s been to support Eric, Adam, and the others in this program over the last 30 years.”
With Jeff’s steady support and encouragement, Adam and Eric have grown in both independence and confidence. They visit the barber shop together, cook dinner, run errands, manage money, and more. Side by side, they’ve learned new skills, explored their community, and embraced new experiences.
Today, Adam and Eric both work at Bancroft’s corporate office, where they continue to develop their vocational and social skills. Thanks to the generosity of donors, they’ve also been able to attend concerts and sporting events, and even travel for vacations – adventures that used to feel out of reach.
Their parents are proud and grateful to see the progress they’ve made, the joy they’ve lived, and the Bancroft family that has embraced them. They take comfort knowing their sons spend their days in an environment where they are seen, valued, and encouraged to thrive.
Adam and Eric’s story has come full circle. Once students learning about the world around them, they now serve as role models for others in Bancroft’s programs. Their positivity and perseverance inspire their peers to dream big, try new things, and embrace community life to its fullest.
At Bancroft, we know independence looks different for everyone. What matters most is that each person finds purpose, belonging, and joy in their own way. Adam and Eric remind us that with the right support, friendship, and opportunity, lifelong growth is always possible.
