A new wellness initiative funded by The Wawa Foundation and supported by Rowan University is helping adults at Bancroft’s Gloucester Day & Employment Program build healthier habits, one lunch at a time.
Thanks to a generous grant from The Wawa Foundation, “Lunchtime Energize” is bringing nutrition education and structured physical activity to adults at Bancroft’s Adult Day & Employment Program in Swedesboro, NJ. Developed in partnership with Rowan University, the program aims to enhance the well-being of individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
“Supporting the health and wellness of our communities is at the heart of what we do,” said Liz Simeone, President of The Wawa Foundation. “We’re honored to help Bancroft expand opportunities for individuals with disabilities to live healthier, more active lives.”
Individuals with I/DD face higher risks of diabetes and hypertension, according to the National Institutes of Health. At the Gloucester Day Program, for example, 20% of the individuals supported have diabetes, and 10% have hypertension. Barriers such as sensory sensitivities, limited food variety, and challenges with physical activity can make building healthy habits more difficult.
“Lunchtime Energize” is designed to address these challenges in a fun, engaging way. Participants learn about nutrition while preparing and trying new foods, expanding their palates with healthier options.
Rowan University staff and students, including dietitians and exercise science students, are working alongside Bancroft dietitian Robert Trombley to lead cooking sessions and nutrition education. Recently, participants prepared and enjoyed baked broccoli cheddar bites, which were a huge hit.

Physical activity is a key part of the program, with classes developed under guidance from Rowan’s health and exercise department. Virtual reality fitness apps are also being explored to add variety and excitement to the sessions.
“At Bancroft, we are committed to ensuring the individuals we support have every opportunity to live healthier, more engaged lives,” said Karen Lindgren, PhD, Chief Clinical Officer at Bancroft. “Through this partnership, we’re addressing health and wellness in a way that is accessible, meaningful, and empowering for each person.”
The goal is to build a culture of wellness that extends beyond a single lunchtime, helping individuals develop sustainable habits and feel their best each day. With the support of The Wawa Foundation and the expertise of Rowan University, Bancroft is creating opportunities for those we support to thrive through healthier, more active lives.
