Bancroft NeuroRehab Outpatient Program Director and Speech-Language Pathologist, Michelle Valente discusses aphasia, the condition Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with.

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that can affect one’s ability to express themselves either verbally or in writing and can also affect auditory and reading comprehension skills.

Word finding deficits are a classic symptom for most people with aphasia. At Bancroft NeuroRehab we treat many individuals suffering from aphasia as a result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury,  brain tumor or other neurological condition. We work with them and their families to help them communicate effectively in all aspects of their life and with all communication partners.

While there is no cure for aphasia, therapy can go a long way in helping those affected regain communication skills over time.

For those affected, “Don’t give up! You will make progress, You will get better.” states Michelle, “We’ll provide the expertise, you provide the motivation.”

For more information contact Bancroft NeuroRehab. More resources can also be found at the National Aphasia Association.
