Bancroft is honored to have been awarded a grant from the Eagles Autism Foundation to help fund a new sensory room at our Burlington Adult Day & Employment Program for adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This generous grant will provide much-needed sensory resources to the individuals in our care, enhancing their well-being, engagement, and overall quality of life.
Many of the individuals supported in our adult day programs have complex needs, including sensory sensitivities and processing difficulties that can make daily activities overwhelming. A dedicated sensory space will help them regulate their emotions, reduce stress, and participate more fully in learning, social, and vocational activities.
Why Sensory Rooms Matter
The purpose of a sensory room is to help individuals regulate their sensory experiences, whether they need a space to calm down or one to invigorate themselves. When someone struggles with sensory regulation, it often manifests in their behavior. This can include aggression, destructive actions, or simply shutting down and disengaging from the world around them.
Key benefits of sensory rooms include:
- Reduced stress and anxiety by providing a calming retreat.
- Enhanced social interaction and communication through shared sensory experiences.
- Improved cognitive and motor skills with engaging sensory activities.
