Expanding What’s Possible: Strategic Partnerships Drive Innovation at Bancroft

WHYY highlights Bancroft’s partnerships with St. Joseph’s University and Drexel University as they explore new AI possibilities and research to improve the lives of aging adults with autism.

Bancroft was recently featured on WHYY, exploring how innovation and strategic partnerships are shaping the future of care for adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

The story highlights Bancroft’s collaboration with Saint Joseph’s University and Drexel University to examine how artificial intelligence and academic research can be used to better support aging individuals with autism. Featured prominently in the piece is Pepper, an AI-powered humanoid robot who has quickly become a beloved presence among residents at Bancroft’s Judith B. Flicker Residences.

“Together, we’re working to find real-world solutions to support people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities as they age,” said Dr. Karen Lindgren, Chief Clinical Officer at Bancroft. “These partnerships bring innovative research and lived experience together in a way that truly benefits the people in our care.”

Thanks to donor support, Bancroft has purchased its own Pepper robot. Pepper will reside at the Flicker Residences, where she will continue to be part of the ongoing research in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University.
