A Longing for a “Yes”
When Luke received his autism diagnosis at the age of two, Annie and David Vaughn, his parents, were presented with a list of potential service providers. However, their search for the right fit proved disheartening. One program deemed Luke “too low functioning” for their services. Discouraged but determined, they approached Bancroft with a glimmer of hope.
“It was so lovely to get that ‘yes’ from Bancroft,” shared Annie. “Within a few short months, Luke began signing and then learned to speak. As he was able to communicate his needs, the self-injury fell away.”
Navigating New Challenges
As Luke grew older, new challenges emerged. At 13 or 14, his behavior became increasingly agitated, leading to safety concerns at school. Facing the possibility of hospitalization, the Vaughns once again turned to Bancroft.
“They weren’t able to keep him safe,” shared David about the school environment. “And so there was talk of hospitalization and we were just beyond distraught. We approached Bancroft again in crisis and again, that yes from Bancroft was this unbelievable relief.”
A Lifeline During the Pandemic
The global pandemic brought its own set of challenges. Luke’s sleep patterns became disrupted, creating immense strain on the entire family. When Luke’s behavior became unsafe at home, the Vaughns knew a new living situation was necessary. Again they turned to Bancroft, confident that they could provide the care and support Luke needed.
Luke has resided in a Bancroft group home for a year now. The positive impact is undeniable. He has gained significant independence, mastering daily tasks like getting food and drinks, operating the dishwasher and doing his laundry.
A Brighter Future for Luke
The Vaughns’ story extends beyond Luke’s individual growth. Knowing that Bancroft will be there for Luke throughout his life provides immense comfort. They can now focus on their future with peace of mind, knowing their son will be cared for with love and respect.
“One of the things that’s really important about Bancroft and the services it provides is that we’re not just a parent of Luke,” said Annie. “His twin sister is always in our minds, and the fact that she will not have to struggle to find a place for him to live, that his daily routine will be set up and that he’ll have the support of Bancroft and that she can just come and visit him and love him as she always has. That’s priceless.”
